Applying the Social Security tax to wages over $400,000

How much do people want it

What got approved

Nothing. The only thing that changed happens automatically every year.

The amount of pay that gets taxed for Social Security rose to $184,500 this year. That rise happens on its own under a law already on the books, to keep pace with wages. Congress did not vote on it and it is not progress on this topic.

What could have been

Two bills would do this. Neither has been brought up for a vote.

One would apply the tax again to pay above $400,000, leaving a gap between the current cut-off and that figure. The other would raise the cut-off to $250,000 and also tax some investment and business income.

To put the current cut-off in plain terms: someone earning a million dollars a year had finished paying into Social Security for 2026 by the second week of March.

Additional notes

Nothing to report. Where a government department changes a rule affecting this topic, it appears here — never counted as the government getting something done. Why.
